saw 2 black snakes and 1 rattlesnake..yuk!! Continue 3.4 miles to Hilborn Fields and then 2.7 miles to Slate Run where there is a general store with supplies, yummy baked goods and fishing gear. The canyon was beautiful, the scenery lovely and picturesque, and the large rattlesnake in the middle of the trail was definitely more afraid of us. So I was resting there, soaking up some rays, conditioning the new skin Id shed the old coat, and all of a sudden I feel some water land on me. One was with a turkey who decided to leave the side of the trail just as I was coming along. . Pine Creek Outfitters provided me with a complimentary shuttle for this trip, but I was very impressed with their offerings and wouldnt hesitate to recommend them. This 63 mile trail is best described by dividing it into 2 sections. There are more access areas and comfort stations along the southern route but not a lot of opportunities to purchase food or water. If your into woodworking you need to checkout Irion Lumber too. We are experienced riders my husband and I do between one and two thousand miles a year and this is one we look forward to every year. Wonderful. Next time, we will call ahead to the Cedar Creek Inn to hopefully get one of the four rooms with ensuite baths, but even without, it was still a fun place to stay and a great trail to ride north. I also remember being very tired after riding the 40 miles in one day. The staff is friendly and there is 150 years of history (and antiques) plus a purportedly haunted room (14). They allowed us to use their paqrking lot and changing room to get out of our wet clothes. This is the southern access to the PA canyon. If you want to check out the amazing vista at Leonard Harrison State Park, continue walking up the hill when the trail turns away from the creek. This is a popular spot for starting rides along the trail. There is a small, unmarked trail that heads off towards the rock. It was drizzling when we left Cedar Run but at times was a downpour. Head west on Route 6 a few miles and there is the Coachstop Inn, Antlers Inn and the Log Cabin Inn. Pack something in advance and take in one of many rest stops along the way for lunch. This portion is much less scenic so we actually turned around in the Village of Asaph (we explored Asaph but nothing and nobody was around) to begin the trip back to Slate Run. One of our favorite rides was a two-day trip along the entire length. The trail is approximately 60 miles but can be broken into shorter day trips. Calling ahead for a reservation is a must. The rural scenery is gorgeous and the trail is well-maintained with very little change in grade. We drove to Slate Run in the morning (an adventure in itself since Slate Run is off the beaten path) and began our ride at about 9:00 AM north towards Wellsboro. State Forest Hiking Trail, the West Rim Trail is a 30-mile hiking trail maintained along the western rim of Pennsylvanias Grand Canyon. The trail is described as gravel, its pretty hard packed and great to ride you don't need a mountain bike to do it. We rode from the Ansonia access to Turkey run. Gorgeous rhododendron, day lilies, and other blooms along the trail. ), Gee Doug, the wife was expecting me to bring home dinner, and I need to get a mouse quick., Wait, thisll just take a minute. You have to walk to the rock, its a short trail off the bike path, but it really is gorgeous here. very well maintained 12 to 20 feet wide hard packed cinder. From Blackwell southward, most of the tiny towns have a general store or restaurant where basic necessities can be purchased. The scenery was perfect, and we saw wildlife all along the way. Saw a bear. The Pine Creek Rail Trail is a reason in and of itself to visit Wellsboro. The project has taken 19 years to construct so far. This is a very peaceful ride through the narrowest part of the canyon. Stayed in Wellsboro at the Sherwood Motel. Im local and I ride the trail a lot. He corners another snake and stops him when he tries to slither away. (I can recommend the house made peanut butter pie!) This is a real gem in Pennsylvania and is a heck of a product turned out by the Rails to Trails program. I tried this trail last year, on the way home from the Great Allegheny Passage, in a heavy rain wearing a poncho. There are mile markers each and every mile, park benches along the way. There are at least 3 places to stop and get refreshments and many bathrooms. Everyone in town told me that the rail is going to be extended into town eventually but no one seemed to know the exact time frame. Check out the Great Allegheny Passage in southwestern PA or go mountain biking on the Allegrippis Trails in Huntindgon County. Help defend and expand trails nationwide. The finely crushed limestone surface is best suited for hybrid bikes; a service road next to the trail from Ansonia to Tiadaghton Campground (just northwest of where the trail intersects T357/Tiadaghton Road) is open to equestrians as well. There are also several hotel options at the end of the trail in and around Jersey Shore. The Wellsboro Junction to Darling Run section has new surface which is OK, but does not have the good crushed limestone surface. Also, be careful when visiting sunny, open, and rocky areas. I highly recommend this trail and wish we had time to do more than Ansonia to Slate Run.
After Blackwell, heading north, the 2nd half or the trail, there's no village stops until you reach the end near Ansonia and there's a limited number of restrooms available. Somebody has got to get out there with an odometer and note the mileages of the various stops and someone has to put up some sort of highway signs telling where to turn off to find the trail access points in the southern towns. This section of the trail is not as shaded so we were glad it was cooler and there were more clouds that day. Campgrounds and access areas along the trail are similarly immaculate - they have a strict carry-in, carry-out policy. The fourth overnight trip was the Allegheny Highlands Trail from Cumberland to just south of Pittsburg, PA (121 miles). Absolutely beautiful scenery. You never have an opportunity to give your legs a break. The combination of a great trail and hospitality of the Wolfe General Store made this a ride we will never forget - and we will return! Sitting 17.2 miles south of the Ansonia Access Area, the Blackwell Access Area is a great place to end your bike ride on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. The Ansonia to Blackwell is the most beautiful rail-to-trail I've ever ridden. There are some good places to eat in the area I highly recommend the The Burnin' Barrel Bar along Route 6 just before the turn off to rt 362 that goes to the Darlin run parking area. From Blackwell ten miles north DCNR has put down a new layer of Limestone that is outstanding and a few Locals told me that the plain is to re do the whole trail. It could use a better set of signs to the northern trailhead, but that's the only complaint i can think of. Rest stop had a cool hand pumped well and restrooms. Our first overnight trip was on the Erie Canal Trail beginning in Lockport. My wife and I agreed that we will someday come back to camp at this spot. Pennsylvania has more than 12,000 miles of trails most of which remain accessible during this period. There is a Lodge just 5 to 7 miles further on the trail that I would reccomend for lunch. Once again we met a lot of people (and dogs) enjoying the trail either on foot or bike. Help spread the word. Having been on many trails in the mid-atlantic area, I can say that the Pine Creek Trail is by far the best I have ever been on. It was truly the best 8 days of my life. That helicopter pilot was border-line crazy the way he/she was flying it. The surface was finely-crushed slate of some sort and was well drained and in about as good of condition as any unpaved rail trail I have ever seen. In fact, midweek, or whenever it was, I ran into a Park Ranger and had to ask him what day it was, I had lost all track of time and reality. Theres a store at Slate Run and services at Cammal and Jersey Mills. The trail runs alongside SR 44 into Jersey Shore. There are also several villages along the way and general stores where food and water is available. This is the first place to get food and bottled water along the trail. There's a Burma Shave along this stretch - although it's a little hard to see from the bike path. To reach the northern trailhead at Wellsboro Junction from I-180 W, take Exit 29 to merge onto US 15 N. Go 27.6 miles, and turn left onto SR 414. Based on this info Wellsboro it will be. I started early in the day in Wellsboro. The surface was densely packed fine gravel the entire way without a single hole or rut. Watch out for the biting flies along the Pine Creek bike trail. The open meadow views, with deer and wildflowers everywhere, were spectacular. Would definately recommend this trail and will be coming back to it in my future biking. The 62-mile well-maintained trail runs at the bottom of berscenic Pine Creek Gorge, commonly called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. There are many other access points along the route. I saw four; I could see them perched in the sycamore trees catching the early morning sun as they watched the PC for fish. Such incredible views and scenery that you and your bike might wander right off the trail if you're not careful (I came close to doing this at least 3 times). The trail is excellent! The last freight passed through in 1988, and the trail was born in 1996 and extended to its present length in 2012. Named when the region was swarming with snakes, it is now largely free of these vipers. My other problem is my female companion found restrooms to be a little far apart. Trail surface is excellent and well-maintained. Don't stop on one with your front brakes - ask me how I know. The surface was much more packed down and easier to ride. We started at a parking lot North of Cammal and rode to Blackwell and back. Old railroad bridges with wooden decks, when wet are slippery. The sites are grassy, level, have shade, picnic tables and fire rings. Ready to do it again! When we got to the Jersey Shore our car was waiting for us. Very good trail surface makes riding easy and trail signs provide historical perspectives along the route. No snakes or bears. Opened in 1996 and completed 11 years later, the Pine Creek Rail Trail runs on the abandoned and almost perfectly level roadbed of the former New York Central line to Lyons, NYwhich explains the "L" on mileposts that still stand sentry along much of the route. Awesome! The trail is beautiful and has terrific views of the stream and mountains. The Pine Creek trail will spoil you rotten! The Barbour Rock Trail provides a one-mile round trip from the parking area along Colton Road to Barbour Rock Vista which overlooks Owassee Rapids on Pine Creek. A lot of trails follow roads. The trail is exceptionally well maintained and God has landscaped this trail with beautiful mountains on each side and (this summer) a flowing 'creek' along side.
